To enhance transparency and accountability in law enforcement, Meerut Police have introduced a new initiative titled Operation FIR, guaranteeing that FIRs are filed within 24 hours of receiving a written complaint. This step addresses increasing public dissatisfaction regarding police inaction and the refusal of complaints at local police stations, officials said.
Unveiled by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Vipin Tada on Wednesday, the initiative is being rolled out district-wide immediately. “This move aims to stop people from going from one office to another for justice,” stated Tada. His office alone handles over 100 complaints every week.
As part of Operation FIR, officers must reach out to complainants without delay, share FIR copies via WhatsApp, and provide consistent updates on the investigation, including chargesheet or final report details. Every FIR must also be recorded in the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). Senior officials emphasized that in serious matters, any delay could result in suspension, adding, “Negligence will not be accepted. Officers are accountable for conducting timely and impartial investigations.”
The order applies to all types of complaints—criminal, civil, and cyber—that qualify for FIR registration. While there isn’t a separate platform yet for tracking FIR submissions, complainants can now approach higher authorities like the SSP, circle officer, or superintendent of police if their local police station fails to act.
“This marks a major step towards making policing in Meerut more citizen-focused and responsive,” added the SSP.
