Meerut: Monkey Trouble and Collapsing Ceilings Afflict LLRM Hospital Premises

Meerut: Nearly five years after its launch, the super speciality block at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College stands neglected, plagued by deteriorating infrastructure and a persistent monkey menace.
Constructed at a cost of ₹150 crore—₹120 crore from the Centre and ₹30 crore from the state—the facility was meant to be a premier medical centre. Though BJP president J.P. Nadda laid its foundation stone, the current state tells a different story: collapsing ceilings, poor sanitation, and a campus overrun by monkeys.
“Ceilings dangle above us while we lie on the floor. They could fall any moment,” said Mohd Shawez, an attendant. Adil Khan, with a relative in the cardiology ICU, shared, “Monkeys steal food, threaten us, and even nest in the ceilings.”
Authorities have employed langurs to ward off the monkeys as a short-term measure. “I’m here from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” said a handler, who preferred to stay anonymous. Yet, monkeys return in the evenings, as Khan pointed out.
The facility lacks even basic amenities. With no chairs, attendants are forced to sit on the floor. The toilets are unsanitary—missing water taps and filled with waste.
LLRM principal R.C. Gupta acknowledged the deteriorating condition. “The monkeys have damaged the ceilings, but repairs are underway. Budget is coming in phases, and we’ll resolve the seating issue soon,” he assured.
