Meerut: Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a 36-year-old man from Saharanpur on Tuesday for conspiring to falsely implicate a meat trader in a cow slaughter case. The accused, Vish Singh Kamboj, a self-proclaimed ‘gau rakshak,’ allegedly accepted ₹50,000 from Tipu Qureshi, a meat trader who sought to frame his estranged business partner, police said.

Narender Sharma, SHO of Sarsawa police station, stated, “The accused and his associates blocked a major highway in the district by placing bovine remains on the road, demanding police action against alleged cow slaughterers.” However, police grew suspicious upon noticing that the carcass appeared old. When questioned, Kamboj, who is the founder of the right-wing outfit Vishwa Hindu Parivar, provided contradictory statements. After further interrogation, he confessed to staging the protest at Qureshi’s request.

According to police, both Qureshi and his rival were in the meat trade, but the latter had a more successful business. This allegedly drove Qureshi to plot against him, taking advantage of the legal sensitivity surrounding cow slaughter cases, which often result in courts denying bail. “Qureshi wanted his competitor jailed so that he could dominate the market,” the SHO added.

Qureshi is currently absconding, and police have withheld the name of his intended target until further investigation. Saharanpur SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan confirmed that Kamboj has a criminal history, with seven prior cases, including charges under the Gunda Act and for rioting. An FIR has been registered against him under BNS sections for breach of peace and furnishing false information.
