A Bulandshahr woman has accused six doctors of illegally removing her kidney during surgery at a Meerut hospital in 2017, police reported on Tuesday. Following a local court’s directive, an FIR was registered at Narsena police station last Friday, prompting an investigation. The matter is also being heard in a consumer court.
Kavita Devi, 43, from Bugrasi town, filed a complaint against KMC Hospital and its diagnostic centres, naming Dr. Sunil Gupta (hospital owner), Dr. Ajay N. Vats, Dr. Satish Arora, Dr. Seema Vashney, Dr. Pratibha Gupta, and Dr. Nikita Jaggi.
According to Kavita, she visited KMC Hospital in May 2017 for health concerns. Dr. Sunil Gupta recommended surgery to address internal issues, assuring her it would improve her condition. “After the operation, I was discharged with assurances that my kidneys were functioning properly,” she said.
However, her health deteriorated over the years. In May 2022, an ultrasound conducted by another doctor revealed that one of her kidneys was missing. Kavita claimed that KMC doctors discouraged her from seeking second opinions and falsified ultrasound reports, indicating both kidneys were intact.
When Kavita confronted Dr. Gupta and his staff, she alleged they threatened her family and destroyed medical records. “They tore the documents in front of me,” she said. Her worsening health has left her unable to work, pushing her family into ₹10 lakh debt and forcing them to mortgage their house. “I have three children to care for, and my health continues to decline,” she added.
Dr. Sunil Gupta denied the accusations, describing them as baseless and claiming he had been subjected to extortion attempts for six years. “The allegations are fraudulent. When the police didn’t find merit in the claims, they resorted to court orders for the FIR,” he stated.
Kavita’s lawyer, Paritosh Teotia, said the FIR was ordered by the ACJM III court under BNSS 175(3) after repeated failed attempts to lodge a complaint. “The couple faced immense humiliation running from pillar to post,” he noted.
The case includes charges under IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 326 (grievous hurt by dangerous means), 506 (criminal intimidation), and section 18 of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. Station in-charge Chandgiram Singh confirmed the ongoing investigation.
