New Delhi: Chaudhary Charan Singh University has permanently barred a senior professor at Meerut College from all examination and evaluation responsibilities after she set a political science question paper containing content deemed ‘objectionable’ by individuals associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The action was taken against Professor Seema Panwar, who heads the political science department at the government institution, following protests led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the RSS’s student wing. Demonstrations erupted two days after the exam was held on April 2.
The controversy stemmed from a question in the second-semester paper that allegedly linked the RSS with the rise of religion- and caste-based politics, mentioning it alongside groups like the Naxalites and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front.
“She has been debarred from all future examination and evaluation duties at the university,” confirmed university registrar Dhirendra Kumar Verma. An internal probe identified Panwar as the question paper’s author.
Verma added that Professor Panwar submitted a written apology, stating that she did not intend to offend anyone with the content.
Meanwhile, ABVP members held a protest on campus and submitted a memorandum to the registrar demanding strict action over the inclusion of the RSS in such a context.
