Meerut: A local trader has been arrested for allegedly mailing ransom letters to a businessman, demanding ₹50 lakh to fund his son’s wedding and threatening to kill the businessman’s son if the demand wasn’t met, police reported on Saturday.
Naseer Ahmed, 55, a nail cutter manufacturer from the Lisari Gate area, is accused of sending two threatening letters via speed post—delivered on May 13 and May 20—to Fazlur Rahman, a furniture shop owner. Both letters contained serious threats if the extortion demand was ignored.
Inspector Yogendra Kumar of the Kotwali police station stated that Ahmed, who was taken into custody on Friday evening, referenced Rahman’s history of giving luxury gifts, like cars, during his daughters’ weddings and demanded ₹50 lakh in a similar gesture. He warned that Rahman’s son would be shot if he didn’t comply.
After receiving no response, Ahmed sent a second letter intensifying the threats to include abduction and murder. The note also asked Rahman to shut down his shop for two days as a signal of acceptance, warning that failure to do so would result in the permanent closure of the shop.
Rahman reported the matter to the police, who then coordinated with India Post and reviewed CCTV footage from a local post office, identifying Ahmed as the sender. His address was traced, and he was arrested at home. Charged under BNS 308 (extortion), Ahmed confessed to needing the money for his son’s wedding. He has since been presented in court and remanded to judicial custody.
