Dhaka, Bangladesh: Lakhs of Hindus took to the streets across Bangladesh on Saturday to protest against a surge of violent attacks on their community following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India. The protests, which saw massive participation in both the capital Dhaka and Chittagong, the country’s second-largest city, reflect growing unrest and concern among minority communities.

Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, over 205 attacks on minority communities have been reported across 52 districts. The violence has left many Hindus injured, with numerous homes and businesses targeted. Several Hindu temples have been vandalized, and at least two Hindu leaders affiliated with the Awami League party have been killed. In response to the escalating violence, thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus are attempting to flee to neighboring India.

Protesters in Dhaka blocked the Shahbagh intersection for over three hours, demanding urgent government action, including the establishment of special tribunals to expedite trials of those persecuting minorities. They also called for a 10 percent allocation of parliamentary seats for minorities and the enactment of a minority protection law. Notably, thousands of Muslims, including students, joined the demonstrations in solidarity with the Hindu community.

In Chittagong, a similarly large gathering took place at the historic Cheragi Pahar Square, where reports suggest over seven lakh people participated. The protests have also sparked international demonstrations, with rallies held in the United States and the United Kingdom.

In response to the unrest, Bangladesh’s interim leader, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, condemned the attacks on minority communities, describing them as “heinous.” Yunus urged students leading the protests to ensure the protection of all Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist families, stressing the importance of national unity. He reminded the nation that these communities are integral to the country, asserting, “You have been able to save the country; can’t you save some families? They are my brothers; we fought together, and we will stay together.”

The situation remains tense as the nation grapples with the aftermath of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the resulting instability.
