The residents of Dhing, a region in Assam’s Nagaon district, have organized a large protest due to the alleged gang rape of a minor girl. This incident has led to an indefinite shutdown of shops and business establishments in the area. The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has vowed to take decisive action against those accountable.

The disturbing incident occurred as the young Class X girl was going home from her tuition on a fateful Thursday evening. Suddenly, three individuals on a motorcycle surrounded her, and to her horror, she was allegedly subjected to a horrifying assault before being abandoned in a helpless and unconscious state near a pond on the roadside. Later, she was discovered by concerned locals, who immediately alerted the authorities. The police swiftly responded, taking her to a health center in Dhing before relocating her to a hospital in Nagaon for an extensive medical examination and treatment.

On Friday morning, a wave of solidarity swept through the streets as individuals from diverse backgrounds united in a demand for justice, echoing their calls for the arrest of the perpetrators. The bustling marketplaces fell silent as shopkeepers shuttered their businesses in a display of shared outrage. Simultaneously, various social and political organizations amplified their voices, advocating for severe punishment for the guilty parties and enhanced safety measures for women and girls. The palpable tension in the area necessitated an escalation in police presence and vigilance to maintain peace.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unequivocally stated, “The appalling incident at Dhing, involving a minor, is a crime against humanity and has profoundly impacted our collective conscience.” Sarma emphasized that this was not an isolated incident in Dhing and pointed out that in areas where Indigenous people in Assam have become a minority, such incidents often occur.

Sarma told the media that this was not the first such incident in Dhing. He said wherever Indigenous people in Assam had become a minority, they often faced such incidents. Sarma alleged that a section of members of a particular community has become very active and has been encouraged to commit such crimes. He mentioned that the criminals who committed the heinous crime against a minor Hindu girl in Dhing will not be spared by the law.

During the press briefing, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that there have been 22 incidents of crimes against women in the past two months, making this the 23rd such case in the state. The police have detained one suspect and are actively searching for others, ensuring that “firm lawful action” will be taken against the perpetrators, as Director General of Police GP Singh rushed to Dhing to address the situation.
