Massive Fire Rages Through Illegal Factory in Delhi’s Rithala, 4 Killed

A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday evening at an illegal four-storey factory building in Rithala’s Budh Vihar, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuring three others. The fire, which started on the mezzanine floor around 7:30 pm, quickly spread to all floors, trapping several workers inside.
The factory, located in the Rana Complex, had units manufacturing plastic bags, perfumery, and stored disposable goods. The Delhi Fire Department deployed 50 fire tenders, and it took nearly 100 firefighters and a 13-hour operation to bring the fire under control by 9:10 am on Wednesday.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
The bodies of the four deceased were charred beyond recognition, and forensic tests, including DNA analysis, will be conducted to establish their identities. Three injured persons, including factory owner Nitin Bansal and workers Rakesh Kumar and Virender, were admitted to hospitals with burn injuries.
Investigation and Charges
A case has been registered under Sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire), 125-A (act endangering life), and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police are investigating the cause of the fire and the building’s safety compliance.
Safety Concerns
The fire department official noted that the building lacked fire safety measures, as it was not governed by any agency like DSIIDC, MCD, or DDA. The narrow lanes and lack of access for fire tenders hindered the rescue efforts.
The incident highlights the importance of enforcing safety regulations and ensuring compliance in industrial areas. The investigation will determine the extent of negligence and responsibility.
