Massive Earthquake Hits China: Death Toll Rises to 134
A massive earthquake of 6.2 magnitude has hit the southern part of Gansu province in western China. The strong tremor hit Jishishan county, killing around 134 people, injuring hundreds, and reducing houses to stones and pebbles. According to Chinese media, the quake has damaged the affected area’s water, electricity, transport, communications, and other infrastructure. Several aftershocks were also reported, as per some sources. It is reportedly one of the deadliest earthquakes the country has ever faced.
As per the latest reports, the death toll has risen to 134, while 980 remain injured. Rescue operations are being conducted rapidly to pull those who are still stuck under the collapsed structures. The quake has claimed around 21 lives in Qinghai province, with 31 people missing and 198 injured. Over 4500 rescuers from the public security department, fire department, and military have sprung into action ever since the natural catastrophe hit the country. Over 820 vehicles were dispatched to the affected area to search for survivors in every corner. Twelve search and rescue dogs along with over 10,000 sets of equipment have been sent to the quake-hit region.
Analysts and experts are of the view that shallow earthquakes cause much damage to infrastructure. The epicenter of this earthquake was the Liugou township, which is about 8 kilometers from Gansu province. Qinghai province of China is prone to earthquakes due to the shifting of the continental plates.
Previously, a major earthquake hit China in 2014, killing around 600 people in the southwestern Yunnan province, and before that, another major earthquake hit Sichuan province in 2008.
