Bhiwandi: A massive fire erupted early Saturday morning in a ground-plus-four-storey building in Bhiwandi, which housed godowns storing plywood, clothing, and footwear. Despite nearly nine hours of continuous efforts, firefighters have yet to bring the blaze under control. During the operation, a fire department employee sustained injuries.
The intense flames caused the top two floors of the building to collapse, yet the fire remains active as firefighting efforts continue. Multiple fire engines from Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Thane were dispatched to the scene to assist in dousing the flames. The fire started around 3:25 a.m. at a godown in the Mani Surat complex, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
The Bhiwandi fire team responded immediately, but due to the severity of the situation, backup was called in from Kalyan and Thane, bringing additional water tankers to the site.
Bhiwandi Fire Officer Rajesh Pawar stated that the fire spread quickly because of the highly flammable materials stored inside. He added that an employee named Wagh sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze. The fire department suspects a short circuit might have triggered the incident, as the godown was closed at the time.
