Marapi Volcano Erupts Again in Indonesia, Death Toll Rises to 23

The eruption of Mount Marapi volcano in Indonesia has claimed the lives of at least 23 climbers, their bodies were discovered in the aftermath. It is a 2981-meter volcano that erupted on Sunday and emitted ashes as high as 3 kilometers into the air. A huge amount of volcanic debris covered the villages, towns, and other nearby areas. As per a video posted on social media, volcanic dust had smeared the faces of the evacuated climbers. The volcanic ashes blocked the sunlight, pushing the authorities to distribute masks and eyeglasses to the residents to safeguard them from these gases.
As per the disaster management agency, BNPB, the high-density volcano erupted at 2:54 pm and spread to the nearby districts. Authorities have restricted the inhabitants from carrying out any activities within 3 kilometers of the crater.
The death toll due to the natural disaster has risen to 23. It is estimated that above 50 climbers were rescued. Around 75 climbers had started climbing their way up when such a horrific incident occurred, thereby leaving them stranded. Out of the rescued people, many of them had major injuries for which they were rushed to the nearby hospitals or health care centers.

The rescuers were attempting every possible operation to evacuate the victims. As per the authorities, Marapi has been facing a dangerous situation and has been on high alert since 2011.
Mount Marapi Volcano
Mount Marapi is otherwise known as the “Mountain of Fire.” It is a complex volcano located in West Sumatra in Indonesia. Indonesia has been experiencing regular seismic and volcanic activity as it is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which is famous for the collision of the tectonic plates. Indonesia has been described as “The Archipelago Nation,” having around 130 active volcanoes. As per the volcanological survey of Indonesia, Mount Marapi volcano has been at the second level of the four-tier alert system since 2011. In 1979, a similar high-intensity eruption from Mount Marapi had killed around 60 people.
As of today, the evacuation is still going on with 13 people dead, many injured, and many missing. Relief measures are being taken, and operations are being carried out to protect the residents of the nearby areas.
