Struggles and Allegations: Manish Sisodia, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), recently shared his experiences after being discharged from prison following a 17-month imprisonment in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV’s Executive Editor Preeti Choudhry, Sisodia revealed that he never expected to be detained for such a long duration. He claimed that the charges against him were fabricated with the sole aim of prolonging the trial and keeping him in custody.

Sisodia expressed his disbelief at the turn of events, stating that just a few months before his arrest, he did not foresee such a situation. He accused the BJP of creating an “invented conspiracy” around the liquor policy case to ensure his prolonged detention. Despite this, Sisodia maintained his inner confidence, acknowledging that political accusations are common, although he expected some genuine grounds for his arrest.

Life in Jail and Future Plans

Reflecting on his time in jail, Sisodia described the experience as mentally challenging, especially since his wife was ill during his imprisonment. He shared that the solitary confinement in his cell, where he spent 15 to 16 hours a day, forced him to engage in reflection and self-discovery. He used this time to strengthen his resolve, refusing to let the situation break his spirit.

When asked about his future role in the Delhi government, Sisodia stated that he is currently focused on working for the party and is in no rush to return to an administrative position. He emphasized that any decision regarding his role would be made by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s senior leadership. Sisodia is so popular that the citizens of Delhi have shown increased respect for the party, appreciating how they have remained steadfast despite the challenges.

Sisodia criticized the BJP’s charges that Delhi is suffering due to the government’s lack of efficiency, rejecting them as baseless allegations. He called for the entire opposition to unite against what he described as a “politics of oppression,” suggesting that the current political climate requires a collective effort to combat fabricated charges and unjust actions.

Sisodia was granted bail by the Supreme Court, which highlighted that his long imprisonment without trial violated his right to a speedy trial. As part of his bail conditions, Sisodia must furnish a Rs 10 lakh bond, surrender his passport, and report to the police station twice a week. Despite these restrictions, the Supreme Court allowed him to enter the Delhi Secretariat, dismissing a plea by government agencies to bar him from discharging official duties.
