Hours after the bodies of all six missing individuals were recovered from a river in Manipur, protesters launched attacks on the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs on Saturday. In response, the government imposed indefinite curfews in five districts and suspended internet services in parts of the state. Protesters ransacked the homes of three legislators, including that of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s son-in-law, setting properties ablaze. Security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds in several parts of Imphal, according to police.

The bodies of two women and a child, missing since Monday from a displaced persons’ camp, were discovered in the Barak River in Jiribam on Saturday. Three other bodies, including those of a woman and two children, had been recovered the previous night. In total, six bodies, including three children, were found in Jiribam district and sent to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in Assam for post-mortem examinations. Protesters targeted the residences of ministers Sapam Ranjan, L Susindro Singh, and Y Khemchand, an official reported. Curfews were subsequently imposed in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts to address the deteriorating law and order situation. Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi also announced a two-day suspension of internet and mobile data services in seven districts starting from Saturday evening.

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a coalition of civil society groups from Imphal Valley, demanded military action against militants within 24 hours. Meanwhile, a mob attempted to storm the personal residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, escalating tensions further. Later that night, at least two churches and three houses were set on fire in Jiribam town, according to officials. Reports of additional arson and property destruction have emerged but remain unverified.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, described the recent violence in Manipur as “deeply disturbing” and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and take immediate steps to restore peace. Mizoram’s apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), appealed to the central government to ensure the safety of Mizo students in Manipur, expressing concern over escalating violence, including the recent killing of 10 tribal people.

The Manipur government has requested the central government to review and withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), which grants extensive powers to the armed forces and was recently reimposed in six police station areas of the state. Since May last year, inter-communal clashes over government quotas in jobs and education have claimed 250 lives and displaced 60,000 people in Manipur.
