Manchester City edged fierce rivals Manchester United in a pulsating match that was befitting of the very best of English football and claimed the Community Shield with a breathtaking 7-6 victory in a penalty shootout.

This game was always going to be tight, with both teams combining the experience of seasoned players and emerging raw talent. Erik ten Hag fielded a strong United team that included Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford; for their part, Pep Guardiola opted for a mix of experience and class with the prolific striker Erling Haaland up front and exciting young winger Oscar Bobb.

It opened well for City, who enjoyed some early control and fashioned the first clear opening when James McAtee hit a post. However, United got on their feet as Amad Diallo and Rashford went close. The first half ended goalless, although tension was high with both teams feeling that they could take control of the game.

The second half had even more drama. United thought that they had taken the lead when Bruno Fernandes rifled in a great shot from 25 yards, but he was offside. Ten Hag made some tactical substitutions, sending on Alejandro Garnacho, who would have a say in things shortly.

It came all the way through to a penalty shootout, a dramatic climax. Neither side would flinch, with their kicks in these scheduled spot-kicks converted with precision. The tension was ratcheted up as the shootout wound on and on before falling on Manuel Akanji—with each kick weighing a ton—to seal it for City in sudden death. That brought euphoric celebrations from the blue half of Manchester.

That’s an enormous statement of early intent from Pep Guardiola and his side, who aim to take back the crown in the Premier League, lost to Arsenal last time around. United are disappointed at losing that opportunity to secure silverware but showed signs of what they could be under Erik ten Hag.

Sunday’s Community Shield game was an exciting preview of what is sure to be another action-packed Premier League season. Fielding competitive squads and with high goals set for themselves, these two teams fulfill expectations that the competition between City and United will be nothing but at fever pitch in the months to come.

After all the dust of the game, only one thing is certain: the war for supremacy in English football has barely just started.
