Man Sets Himself on Fire Near Parliament Over Stress from Legal Cases Against Him
According to the police, the man brought the petrol he used to set himself on fire in a bottle from his home in Baghpat.
A 26-year-old man who set himself on fire near the Parliament building on Wednesday afternoon told Delhi Police he intended to die by suicide due to stress caused by three police cases filed against him in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. The man, who is being treated at RML Hospital for over 95% burn injuries, remains in critical condition, doctors reported on Thursday.
Police revealed that the man carried petrol in a bottle from his home in Baghpat to set himself ablaze. He had told his parents he was travelling to the Supreme Court to seek legal aid for his cases but instead went to Rail Bhawan Park, where he carried out the act. “When we spoke to him while he was conscious, he admitted to planning his suicide. He said he took petrol from his bike, boarded a train to Delhi, and lied to his parents about his intentions,” said a senior police officer. At 3:30 PM on Wednesday, the man walked to the Rail Bhawan roundabout, set himself on fire, and collapsed. He was rescued by railway and Delhi police personnel and rushed to the hospital.
The three cases against the victim were registered in 2021, 2022, and 2024 in Baghpat following complaints from a group of individuals. The victim also left a note alleging that the police had not investigated the cases properly. Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Madhup Tiwari stated that the man had been facing a rivalry with the complainants for years. Baghpat police revealed that charge sheets had been filed in all three cases and that they were also investigating complaints made by the victim.
The man’s family, who arrived in Delhi on Thursday, accused the Uttar Pradesh police of filing false cases against them, leading to the victim’s immense stress. The father, a labourer, said the family had been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with a village family since 2021, which resulted in threats and attacks. “My son wanted to become a lawyer but dropped out of college. He was repeatedly harassed. We have never done anything wrong, but the police don’t listen to poor people,” the father lamented. He also said his son left home on Thursday morning, claiming he was going to file a plea at the Supreme Court and find a pro bono lawyer.
Devastated by his son’s actions, the father added, “We thought he was trying to bring us justice. We never expected this. Seeing him like this is unbearable… I wish he hadn’t taken this step.” Delhi Police stated that the specifics of the dispute and the allegations against the Uttar Pradesh police will be investigated further.
