A 45-year-old man was killed after being hit by a car and allegedly dragged for around 10 meters in Delhi’s Connaught Place, according to officials cited by PTI on Sunday. The incident occurred on September 4. The driver, Shivam Dubey, fled the scene but was arrested the following day. Police reported that Dubey, originally from Madhya Pradesh, had borrowed a friend’s car in Mahipalpur, South Delhi, to meet someone in Connaught Place. Around 3:25 pm on Wednesday, Dubey allegedly struck Lekhraj, a homeless man, who was crossing the road near Barakhamba Radial Road at Connaught Place’s outer circle.
An unidentified official stated that Lekhraj became trapped under the car’s wheels, but Dubey continued driving. After dragging Lekhraj for approximately 10 meters, Dubey allegedly fled, leaving him on the road. Lekhraj was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Following the incident, Dubey returned the car to his friend. The police tracked down the vehicle and its owner using CCTV footage, leading to Dubey’s arrest under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The car involved in the accident has been impounded, and further investigations are underway.
According to Delhi Police data, 518 people have died in 511 fatal crashes in the national capital as of May 15 this year, a slight decrease from 552 deaths in 544 crashes during the same period last year. Most of the fatal accidents occurred on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and GT Karnal Road. A traffic police officer, speaking anonymously, attributed the majority of accidents to drunk driving and speeding, especially at night.
