A 22-year-old man was shot and killed on Sunday during a communal clash in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, over music being played during a procession. Officials reported that around six others were injured due to stone-pelting and gunfire. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condemned the violence, stating that those responsible would face consequences. The clash occurred as a procession carrying a Durga idol for immersion passed through Mahrajganj Bazar in Mansoor village.
The victim, Ram Gopal Mishra, a resident of Rehua Mansoor village, was shot while accompanying the procession. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment, according to a family member.
The killing led to heightened communal tensions in the area, prompting the cancellation of similar processions in Fakharpur town and other areas. Despite this, Chief Minister Adityanath directed authorities to ensure the continuation of idol immersions, instructing them to coordinate with religious organizations and deploy additional police personnel at the sites. Police were sent to the village to restore order, and in response to the unrest, Hardi Police Station head SK Verma and Mahsi outpost in-charge Shiv Kumar were suspended for negligence.
UP DGP Prashant Kumar confirmed one fatality and reported sporadic incidents of arson in neighboring districts, such as Gonda and Balrampur. To control the situation, ADG Gorakhpur zone KS Pratap Kumar and DIG Devipattan Amarendra Pratap Singh were dispatched with additional forces. Following the news of Ram Gopal Mishra’s death, local villagers vandalized vehicles and set them on fire in Maharajganj market. A large police presence, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), was deployed, with senior officers such as SP Bahraich Vrinda Shukla, DIG Amarendra Pratap Singh, and divisional commissioner Shashi Bhushan Lal overseeing the situation.
