Meerut: In Bulandshahr, a 22-year-old man, Arjun Singh, died by suicide after being falsely accused of kidnapping a woman who later returned home married to another man. Kumkum Singh, a 20-year-old BA student, went missing on May 2, prompting her family to file a kidnapping complaint against Arjun, who worked as a petrol pump salesman in Gurgaon.

However, CCTV footage revealed that Kumkum had left on her own in an e-rickshaw. Upon her return, she testified in court that Arjun was not involved and that she had eloped with Mohit Kumar, whom she later married. Despite this, her family’s suspicion, rooted in Kumkum’s past relationship with Arjun, led to a confrontation between Arjun and her father on May 6, which officials believe may have contributed to his tragic decision.

Arjun’s family claimed the police, acting on the complaint, conducted aggressive raids, damaged property, and sided with the woman’s family without proper investigation. According to Arjun’s uncle, police summoned Arjun on May 7, and despite him providing proof that he was in Gurgaon on May 2, the harassment persisted. Fearing torture or wrongful arrest, Arjun went into hiding and was later found dead, hanging from a tree.

Following his death, four members of Kumkum’s family, including her father, faced charges based on claims that they had earlier threatened Arjun. Kumkum returned on Monday, informing authorities that she left voluntarily with Mohit and that they had married and settled in Gujarat.

The incident has triggered public outrage. “We can’t bring Arjun back, but those responsible must face consequences,” said a local resident. The SSP confirmed that Kumkum’s father was arrested and charged with abetment to suicide, adding that the police’s conduct during the investigation is under review and appropriate action will be taken.
