Police in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested a man for allegedly spitting on a “roti” while preparing it at a wedding ceremony. The arrest followed a viral video on social media showing the incident, according to a senior police official.

Superintendent of Police Ayush Vikram Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that authorities took cognisance of the matter and further action will follow. The incident reportedly occurred in the Brahmapuri police station area on the night of February 21.

This is not the first such case in Uttar Pradesh. In January, a 20-year-old eatery worker was arrested in Ghaziabad for allegedly spitting on food during preparation. A similar case was reported in Bulandshahr in December 2024, where a vegetable vendor was detained for food contamination.

In October last year, state authorities proposed stringent penalties for such offenses, including a 10-year prison sentence—typically reserved for serious crimes like attempted murder or rape. To enforce this, two ordinances were considered by the Uttar Pradesh cabinet. These proposed strict penalties for contaminating food with human waste and mandated eateries to display nameplates with details of their owners and staff.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised the severity of such crimes, stating that a strong law would soon be enacted to curb food contamination.
