West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee found herself in the center of a heated political exchange after making a controversial comment during a speech at a Trinamool Congress event. Addressing the ongoing protests and turmoil in Kolkata, she warned that if Bengal “burns,” the flames could spread to neighboring Assam and even reach Delhi. Her comments aimed to draw a parallel between the protests in West Bengal and the recent turmoil in Bangladesh.
Assam Chief Minister’s Sharp Response
The statement did not sit well with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who took to Twitter to strongly condemn Banerjee’s words. Sarma accused Banerjee of attempting to incite division and unrest across India. “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t try to set India on fire with your politics of desperation,” he tweeted, criticizing her for what he saw as a divisive and inflammatory comment. Sarma’s remarks reflected the growing tension between the two states, with Assam’s leadership taking serious offense at the suggestion that turmoil in Bengal might spill over into their territory.
Backlash from Assam and BJP Leaders
Other BJP leaders from Assam, including Piyush Hazarika, condemned Banerjee’s comments, accusing her of trying to divert attention from her government’s failure to maintain law and order in West Bengal. Hazarika emphasized that such threats would not work in Assam and assured that the state would remain peaceful. Union Minister and Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar went as far as to suggest that Banerjee’s comments were reflective of an “anti-national” mentality, unworthy of a leader in a constitutional position.
The escalating war of words highlights the growing political friction between BJP-ruled Assam and TMC-ruled West Bengal, as leaders from both states continue to clash over various issues. Banerjee’s statement and the subsequent response from Assam’s administration underscore the sensitive nature of inter-state relations in a politically charged environment.
