On Tuesday, the esteemed Malayalam filmmaker and screenwriter, Siddique Ismail, passed away at Amrita Hospital in Kochi. At the age of 63, Siddique had been undergoing liver-related treatment for over a month and unfortunately suffered a heart attack on Monday.
The passing occurred around 9.10 p.m. Siddique’s condition had deteriorated on Monday, leading doctors to place him on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support. He is survived by his wife, Shajitha, and three daughters.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan mentioned that Siddique initially began his journey as a mimicry artist and gradually evolved into a renowned filmmaker. He showcased profound life issues through a lighthearted and humorous style. Additionally, he displayed his brilliance as a screenwriter. The enduring affection for the scenes from the movies he co-directed with Lal is a testament to the widespread recognition of his talent, remarked CM Vijayan.
Several actors, including Mohanlal, Prabhu Deva, Keerthy Suresh, and Dulquer Salmaan, expressed their condolences on various social media platforms. Mohanlal, addressing Siddique as his ‘Big Brother,’ conveyed his sorrow. Veteran actor Mammootty also mourned Siddique’s demise on Facebook, expressing, “As dear ones continue to depart… one experiences the excruciating pain it brings… Farewell to our own Siddique.”
Hailing from Kochi, Siddique entered the Malayalam film industry alongside his friend Lal as an assistant director under veteran filmmaker Fazil in 1983. The duo went on to create some of Malayalam’s most prominent comedy blockbusters, such as “Ramji Rao Speaking,” “In Harihar Nagar,” “Godfather,” and “Vietnam Colony.” Siddique also directed films in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Notably, his Tamil films “Friends” and “Kaavalan,” where he collaborated with actor Vijay, received a warm reception.
Siddique and Lal demonstrated that when writers possess a deep understanding of characters and the situations they navigate, coupled with insightful foresight into potential character developments, humor naturally flows without feeling contrived.
