In the Mahayuti alliance, tensions have arisen between allies BJP and NCP over the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar seat. While the NCP has nominated Nawab Malik, the BJP has announced Shiv Sena’s Suresh Krishna Patil, also known as Bullet Patil, as the “official” candidate for the constituency in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya expressed strong opposition, stating on X, “Mahayuti (Shiv Sena) official candidate from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar is Bullet Patil. We will fight to defeat candidates supporting Vote Jihad, Terrorism.”

Nawab Malik filed his nomination as the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) candidate on Tuesday, clarifying, “Today, I submitted my nomination for Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar Vidhan Sabha constituency as an NCP candidate. I initially filed as an independent as well, but the party provided the AB form, which we submitted at 2:55 pm, making me the official NCP candidate.” Malik also expressed gratitude to leaders Ajit Pawar, Praful Patel, and Sunil Tatkare, highlighting their confidence in his chances and his belief in a strong voter turnout in his favor.

The Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar contest largely focuses on the Muslim vote, with the seat currently held by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi. Malik, a former two-time MLA from Anushakti Nagar, had initially intended to run as an independent from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar after the NCP, under apparent BJP pressure, initially withheld a ticket from him. Malik’s daughter, Sana Malik, is running as the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) candidate for the Anushakti Nagar seat.

Meanwhile, Zeeshan Siddique, son of former MLA and NCP leader Baba Siddique, joined the NCP last week in the presence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Siddique has been named the NCP candidate for the Vandre East seat, where he previously won in 2019, defeating Shiv Sena’s Vishwanath Mahadeshwar. He left the Congress after his Bandra East seat was allocated to Shiv Sena (UBT) under the Aghadi’s seat-sharing agreement.
