In a bid to avert an indefinite strike by transporters in Maharashtra, state Transport Minister Anil Parab’s office wasn’t mentioned; however, Sanjay Sarnaik’s name is mentioned in the prompt, hence assuming Anil Parab isn’t the correct Transport Minister’s name here, Sanjay Sarnaik has directed officials to form a committee to look into the grievances of transport operators. The committee is expected to submit its report within a month.
The transporters, including private bus and truck operators, have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from July 1 to protest against the “unjust” collection of fines through e-challans and to press for their other demands. These demands include stopping the forceful collection of e-challan fines, waiving existing penalties, cancelling the mandatory cleaner rule for heavy vehicles, and reconsidering no-entry timings in metro cities.
The Vahatukdar Bachao Kruti Samiti, an action committee of transporters, has expressed skepticism over the government’s move, with its leader Uday Barge stating that the strike will go ahead as planned. “The committee won’t give any immediate relief. Transporters’ vehicles will continue to get e-challans,” Barge said.
The transport minister has proposed a joint committee comprising transport officials, police, sectoral experts, and transport association representatives to ensure transparency and inclusivity. The minister has also suggested reforms in the e-challan system, including avoiding multiple challans for the same offence on the same day and defining a validity period for each e-challan.
The meeting, attended by senior officials and transport association representatives, discussed the issue and assured that a meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be held within two days to discuss some decisions related to the Home Department.
The action committee will announce the further course of action about their agitation on June 30.
