In preparation for the Maghi Purnima Snan scheduled for Wednesday, February 12, authorities have implemented strict traffic measures, declaring the entire Maha Kumbh area a ‘no vehicle zone.’ This decision comes a day after severe traffic jams left thousands of devotees stranded for over 30 hours across multiple locations. Reports indicate that traffic congestion spanned nearly 300 kilometers on Monday as devotees made their way to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh. Police were seen advising travelers to turn back if possible, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar, speaking to PTI, clarified that the delays were not due to mismanagement but were a result of the overwhelming number of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh, which is witnessing one of the largest human gatherings in history. He shared that over 40 crore devotees have already taken a sacred dip at the Sangam since the event began on January 13, with millions continuing to arrive daily.
To manage the expected surge for the Maghi Purnima Snan, the district administration has laid out an extensive traffic plan. The entire Mela area will be a ‘no vehicle zone’ from 4 AM on February 11 to ensure the smooth movement of devotees. Similar restrictions will apply within Prayagraj city after 5 PM on the same day. However, essential and emergency service vehicles will be exempt from these restrictions.
Devotees traveling to Prayagraj will be required to park their vehicles in designated parking areas along their respective routes starting from 4 AM on February 11. The restrictions will remain in place until the safe evacuation of devotees from the Mela area on February 12.Additionally, vehicle movement restrictions will apply to Kalpvasis as well, with both entry and exit controls enforced in Prayagraj city and the Mela zone.
