Several people are feared dead following a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday. The incident occurred as massive crowds gathered to take a holy dip in the Ganga on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most sacred days of the festival. Lakhs of devotees had assembled at the site when chaos ensued.
A large number of ambulances rushed to the ghats, transporting the injured to the central hospital within the Mela grounds for treatment. Sources, speaking to HT on condition of anonymity, reported that at least 15 bodies had been brought to the hospital. The situation turned critical at the Sangam in the early hours of Wednesday as the swelling crowd led to a stampede-like scenario during the ongoing Maha Kumbh.
As the pressure of devotees intensified during the Mauni Amavasya ‘Amrit Snan,’ Mela authorities were compelled to disperse people. Public announcements urged pilgrims to vacate the ghats promptly after completing their ritual bath.
Amid the ensuing chaos, several devotees were forced to leave without taking their sacred dip. In response to the tragic incident, multiple Akhadas called off their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ for Mauni Amavasya, even as a large number of worshippers continued their holy bath at the Sangam and other ghats across the Mela grounds.
