French President Emmanuel Macron is emphasizing the need for a fresh approach to France’s economic ties with China. In an interview with La Tribune Dimanche, coinciding with the anticipated arrival of Chinese leader Xi Jinping for a state visit, Macron highlighted Europe’s desire for greater reciprocity in trade relations with China to safeguard economic security.

Using the term “aggiornamento,” an Italian word for update, Macron expressed concerns over China’s surplus production across various sectors, leading to massive exports to Europe. Xi’s visit comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations, with the European Union conducting investigations into alleged Chinese subsidies and cyber espionage.

Despite these challenges, Macron, who previously supported EU investigations into Chinese electric vehicles, is extending a welcoming hand to attract investment from China. Hosting Xi at the Elysee Palace in Paris and planning a nostalgic trip to the Pyrenees mountains, where Macron spent time in his childhood, reflects his efforts to foster closer ties.

While maintaining a firm stance on economic issues, Macron underscored Europe’s role as a balancing force in global affairs, advocating for continued engagement with China on climate and security matters. He emphasized the importance of collaboration while acknowledging the need for fair and reciprocal trade practices.

The upcoming visit symbolizes both the complexities and opportunities in the Franco-Chinese relationship as leaders navigate diplomatic challenges while seeking avenues for cooperation and mutual benefit.
