Macron Likely to Lose the French Parliamentary Election, as Far-Right National Rally Won Big in the First Round

A risky decision by President Emmanuel Macron to call snap elections somehow seems to have backfired badly as far-right Marine Le Pen of National Rally leads big in the first round of the election. On the other hand, President Macron’s party slipped to third.
The initial estimates by IPSOS put the far-right alliance, headed by the National Rally (RN), in first with 34 percent of the vote, ahead of the left-wing alliance in second with 28.1 percent, while Macron’s party trails in a distant third with 20.3 percent. But the final figure will be seen after the second round of voting next Sunday. It is expected that the RN, led by Le Pen, would win between 230 to 280 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly, less than the majority mark of 289 required to form the government, as reported by CNN.
Meanwhile, Mr. Macron’s decision for a snap election came after he was not able to pass certain bills due to a shortage of majority in the National Assembly. He was elected for the second term in 2022, but his party was short of an outright majority. He thought that sudden elections would present voters with a stark choice between himself and political extremes and prevent his left-wing opposition from uniting against him. But that gamble has failed so far, as per the report by The New York Times.
In the meantime, the Kremlin says the French election’s first-round outcome is in line with Europe-wide trends. Russian officials said the results of the French elections would be judged alongside political developments elsewhere, including upcoming votes in the US and UK. “Last week, we saw (Joe) Biden lose the debate (against Donald Trump). And now Macron’s party has lost, coming in third place in the legislative elections. The heads of state in power are suffering resounding defeats,” said Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the Russian Duma, as published in Le Monde.
The final result will be seen after the Sunday polling, as France has seen one of the highest voter turnouts in Parliamentary elections in the last 40 years.
