Lyricist Dev Kohli, Known for ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, Passes Away at 81
His work is critically and commercially acclaimed all over the nation, having created some of the most melodious lines for films such as ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’, ‘Judwaa 2’, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ and more.

Renowned lyricist Dev Kohli, celebrated for his contributions to cinematic verses in movies such as “Baazigar” and “Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!”, passed away on Saturday morning due to age-related ailments, as confirmed by his spokesperson. He was 81 years old. Kohli had been undergoing treatment for age-associated concerns at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and was subsequently shifted back to his residence in Andheri a few days prior. Born into a Sikh family in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Kohli relocated to Dehradun following the Partition.
“He had been under hospital care for nearly three months, being brought home 10 days ago. He peacefully passed away at 4 am today due to age-related complications at his Andheri residence,” stated Pritam Sharma, Kohli’s spokesperson.
A heartfelt farewell was bid to him by his close friends and family as he was cremated at Mumbai’s Oshiwara crematorium. Notable figures from his professional circle, including music composers Anand Raaj Anand and Uttam Singh, were present at his final rites.
Composer Uttam Singh shared, “Dev Kohli, one of our country’s eminent musicians, whose enduring legacy includes his debut song ‘Geet Gata Chal,’ will continue to live on eternally. I consider myself fortunate to have shared a friendship of almost 50 years with him and to have had the privilege of collaborating with him. May his soul find peace.”
In pursuit of opportunities within the entertainment industry, Kohli relocated to Mumbai in 1964, eventually securing a breakthrough in 1969 with the film “Gunda.” His maiden success arrived with “Geet Gaata Hoon Main” from the movie “Lal Patthar,” a melody immortalized by the iconic Kishore Kumar.
Throughout his prolific career, Kohli collaborated with multiple generations of composers, from Shankar-Jaikishan and Anu Malik to Raam-Laxman and Vishal-Shekhar, as well as Anand Raaj Anand and Anand-Milind. His lyrical prowess adorned more than 100 hit films, including notable works like “Maine Pyar Kiya,” “Baazigar,” “Judwaa 2,” “Musafir,” “Shoot Out At Lokhandwala,” and “Taxi Number 911.”
