A tragic incident has unfolded in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where 32-year-old Madhu Singh was found dead in her home just five months after marrying Anurag Singh, a Merchant Navy officer. While Anurag claims Madhu died by suicide, her family strongly alleges he murdered her due to ongoing dowry harassment.
Marriage and Dowry Demands
Madhu and Anurag got married on February 25 this year after connecting on a matrimonial site. Anurag, working as a second officer in a Hong Kong-based ship management firm, allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh as dowry. WhatsApp chats shared by Madhu’s family show Anurag insisting on the dowry amount despite her family offering only Rs 5 lakh.
Allegations of Torture and Cruelty
Madhu’s family says Anurag was extremely controlling, not letting Madhu have a social life or talk to friends and family without his permission. He would check her phone, call records, and even online orders. Madhu’s sister, Priya, shared that Anurag would assault Madhu for trivial reasons, like keeping a plate in the wrong place or driving on the left side of the road.
Extramarital Affair and Pregnancy Allegations
Madhu’s father alleged that Anurag was having an extramarital affair and had spent a night with his ex-girlfriend at a hotel in Lucknow just days before Madhu’s death. He also claims Anurag forced Madhu to abort a pregnancy.
Investigation and Arrest
Anurag has been arrested and charged under sections relating to cruelty and the Dowry Prohibition Act. He told police Madhu died by suicide, but her family believes he killed her. The post-mortem report confirmed death by hanging. Police found suspicious details, like Anurag texting the maid not to come to work that day and delaying informing Madhu’s family about her death by several hours.
