Epifanias, the most recent album by Susana Baca, received a nomination for the best worldwide music album at this month’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
Susana Baca, an award-winning Afro-Peruvian singer and former cultural minister, was taken to a Lima hospital’s critical care unit on Friday, her relatives announced.
Three-time Latin Grammy Award winner Baca is seventy-nine years old.
The nature of Susanita’s sickness was not disclosed by her husband Ricardo Pereira in a statement. “Susanita is very delicate, she is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Edgardo Rebagliati Hospital, where medical professionals are doing their best for her recovery,” the statement read.
David Byrne, the former lead singer of Talking Heads, discovered and signed Baca to the Luaka Bop label thirty years ago. Baca is now well-known in her native country as well as in the US and Europe.
She was the recipient of two Latin Grammy Awards for the Best Folk Album—one in 2002 for “Lamento Negro” and another in 2020 for “A Capella.” Her partnership with the Puerto Rican group Calle 13 produced “Latinoamerica,” which won her another Latin Grammy for Record of the Year in 2011.
In an AFP interview, Baca once likened the efforts of legends like South African Miriam Makeba and Cape Verdean Cesaria Evora to her role in introducing Afro-Peruvian music to a global audience. Her most recent album, “Epifanias,” received a nomination for this month’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in the best worldwide music album category.
She was the first Afro-Peruvian to hold a ministerial position in 2011, but she abandoned the culture portfolio in a matter of months to go back on the road.
