The 53-year-old libertarian economist and self-described anarcho-capitalist, Javier Milei, has pledged a “new era” for Argentina as he took oath as the country’s new president. As Argentina’s new President, he said, “I swear to God and country… to carry out with loyalty and patriotism the position of president of the Argentine nation.” The outgoing President, Alberto Fernandez, placed the Presidential sash over his shoulders.

The President cautioned the citizens to brace themselves for austere measures to curb inflation. He addressed the myriad of his supporters who chanted “Freedom” and “Chainsaw” in connection to his campaign, symbolizing spending cuts. Milei has vowed to stop the “decades of decadence” and mentioned that his predecessors had left him with “the worst inheritance.” Milei mentioned that his thumping electoral victory would become a crucial point in history just like “the fall of the Berlin Wall.” He said that “shock treatment” is the solution for a country suffering from an economic crisis. The new President stated, “We know that in the short term, the situation will worsen. But then we will see the fruits of our efforts.”
After his speech, he moved toward Casa Rosada (Pink House), which is the presidential palace, to wave to his supporters who gathered in thousands. His sister, who is his closest confidant as well as Secretary to the President, Karina, accompanied him. From the balcony of his new residence, he chanted, “I am the lion” and “Long live Freedom, damn it!”
Milei, a social conservative, has promised radical reforms like dollarization and austerity to bring the country’s economy out of the current crisis and to restructure its foreign policy. Many dignitaries, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, attended the mega event.
