Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 in San Francisco due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, as confirmed by an official statement from his family on Monday. The legendary musician leaves behind a profound legacy cherished by music enthusiasts worldwide, with his influence expected to resonate through generations. He is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola; daughters, Anisa and Isabella Qureshi, and their families; as well as his brothers, Taufiq and Fazal Qureshi, and sister, Khurshid Aulia.

On Sunday, flautist and friend Rakesh Chaurasia revealed that Hussain had been admitted to the ICU of a San Francisco hospital due to heart-related complications. Although early reports suggested that the tabla virtuoso had passed away, these claims were refuted by his publicist, who informed PTI that he was undergoing treatment and remained alive at the time. His family had requested prayers for his recovery, but further details about his condition were not disclosed.

In their official statement on Monday, Hussain’s family highlighted his immense contributions as a teacher, mentor, and educator, noting that he had left a lasting impact on countless musicians and aspired to inspire the next generation to greater heights. They described him as an unparalleled cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians in history. The family also requested privacy during this time of mourning.
