Ahead of the high-stakes India vs Australia World Cup final in Ahmedabad on November 19, the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, received a prestigious invitation to witness the cricketing showdown at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, sources have indicated that the PM appointed Deputy PM Richard Marles to represent him at the match, owing to Marles’ visit for the India-Australia 2+2 Dialogue.

Albanese’s past presence at the Ahmedabad stadium during the fourth Test between India and Australia earlier this year adds significance to this development, underlining the diplomatic undertones of this highly anticipated sporting event.

This World Cup final marks a momentous occasion, reviving a two-decade hiatus since India and Australia locked horns in an ODI World Cup final. The last such encounter was in 2003, led by Sourav Ganguly for India and Ricky Ponting for Australia.

Both teams have displayed stellar performances to reach this stage. Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, India secured their final berth by defeating New Zealand by a commanding 70-run margin in the semifinal. On the other side, Pat Cummins led Australia to victory over South Africa’s Temba Bavuma in a thrilling semifinal at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

Recalling their clash earlier in the tournament at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India clinched victory, triumphing over Australia by six wickets, with KL Rahul earning the Player of the Match. The history between these cricket giants spans 13 World Cup encounters, with Australia winning eight and India claiming victory in five, showcasing their prowess in both setting and chasing scores.

As the world awaits this monumental showdown, the presence of Australian leadership at the sidelines underscores the diplomatic significance and historic context of this exhilarating cricketing event.
