After 14 years of Conservative rule, the UK Labour Party secured a landslide victory in UK elections. Outgoing Conservative Party’s Prime Minister concedes defeat, saying, “It has been a difficult night.”
Keir Starmer is likely to be Britain’s next Prime Minister as his party crossed the 326 seats threshold for a working majority in the House of Commons. On the other hand, Conservatives accepted their defeat, and Scotland’s pro-separatist Scottish National Party was virtually wiped out at the UK general election on Friday, suffering a devastating blow to its withering independence movement. Keir Starmer‘s Labour Party overturned more than a decade of SNP domination by winning a majority of Scottish seats as it rode to power in Westminster.
Al Jazeera reported that, after conceding defeat, Sunak is expected in the coming hours to formally tender his resignation to King Charles. Starmer, the leader of the winning party, will then meet the monarch, who will request he form a government. The incoming Prime Minister usually then heads to Downing Street to make a speech to the British public. The new leader will begin appointing government ministers, starting with senior positions and moving on to more junior roles over the coming days.
In the meantime, a record number of cabinet ministers have lost their seats in this election; Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Chief Whip Simon Hart, and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan are among top ministers who lost their seats. The Labour Party has won more than 400 seats with most of the votes counted, while Conservatives have just won 113 seats as of now. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats won 70 seats, which is the best figure for them since 1923.
