Kyiv Hit by Major Overnight Attack; Ukraine Deploys Drones in Retaliation Against Russia
Kyiv hit hard by night attack; Ukraine responds with drones against Russia’s aggression | Escalating tensions raise concerns.
In the Ukrainian capital, local authorities confirmed that two individuals tragically lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries due to falling debris on Wednesday. Overnight, Ukrainian air defenses successfully captured and destroyed more than 20 Russian missiles and drones. In a significant escalation, Russia conducted its most substantial missile attack on Kyiv since the spring.
Furthermore, Russia accused Ukraine of deploying a horde of drones that caused harm to the military transport aircraft at a northwest airport. Additionally, Russia initiated missile attacks on the southern Odesa area, as reported by Governor Oleh Kiper.
A drone attack destroyed four Ilyushin 76 military cargo planes in Russia’s Pskov area, according to an anonymous emergency services official mentioned by the government-owned Tass news agency. Regional Governor Mikhail Vedernikov declared on social media on Wednesday that every one of the aircraft at the airport was going to be canceled. Pskov, which happens to be the home of an elite paratrooper base, is located 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Ukraine on the frontier of NATO nations Estonia and Latvia.
These events unfolded as Ukraine announced that its forces had breached the initial line of Russian fortifications in the southeast of the country and were engaged in efforts to expand the breach. Commencing in June, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has faced resistance from entrenched Russian forces spanning a vast frontline running from Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region through the southern parts to the mouth of the Dnipro River. The steady advancement of this attack has alarmed Ukraine’s allies, who are concerned that a lengthy confrontation may give Russian President Vladimir Putin an advantage in the battle of attrition.
According to a report by Tass, Moscow temporarily closed four international airports after a combat drone was intercepted near the capital. In central Russia, drones were also brought down in the Ryazan, Kaluga, Oryol, and Bryansk regions. Additionally, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the destruction of four Ukrainian speedboats in the Black Sea.
