Kolkata: The investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata continues to intensify, with new allegations surfacing against the accused, Sanjoy Roy. Roy’s mother-in-law has come forward, claiming that he had a history of domestic violence, including assaulting his ex-wife and causing her to miscarry during pregnancy.

In a statement to ANI, the mother-in-law recounted her daughter’s troubled relationship with Roy. She alleged that after an initially peaceful six months of marriage, Roy began to beat her daughter, leading to a miscarriage when she was three months pregnant. “He thrashed her, and we filed a police complaint,” she said, adding that her daughter remained ill afterward and she had to bear the medical expenses. The mother-in-law expressed her belief that Roy should face the maximum penalty for his actions. “Hang him or do whatever you want with him,” she demanded, though she also suggested that Roy might not have committed the crime alone. “He can’t do it alone,” she added.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated Sanjoy Roy on Monday, attempting to determine if others were involved in the crime. The CBI also consulted with officers from the Kolkata Police, who had initially investigated the case.

In a significant development, a local court has granted the CBI permission to conduct a polygraph test on Roy. The test date has yet to be scheduled, but Roy must consent to the procedure before a magistrate, as per legal norms.

The brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor have sparked widespread protests and demands for justice across several cities. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud set to hear the matter on Tuesday, 20th August.

In a related move, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from January 2021 to the present. The SIT has been granted full access to relevant documents from government departments and private agencies and is required to submit its initial report within a month.

The case has gripped the state, with many calling for swift and severe punishment for those responsible. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the full truth behind this horrific crime.
