On Friday, thousands of citizens participated in a relay torch rally spanning approximately 42 km from Hiland Park to Shyambazar Crossing in Kolkata, demanding justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. The rally saw the participation of doctors, voluntary organizations, associations for the specially-abled, cartoonists, IT professionals, scientists, and professors.

The march, which started at 4 p.m. and ended around midnight, also included the city’s rival football clubs, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Officials reported that the procession passed through several major areas, including Ruby Crossing, VIP Bazar, Science City, Chingrighata, and took a detour via Beleghata Building More, Mallick Bazar, NRS Medical College, and SSKM Hospital before reaching Shyambazar in the northern part of the city.

During the rally, participants carried flaming torches, waved the national flag, and flashed their mobile lights while chanting slogans in solidarity with the victim. “Justice delayed is justice denied. We want a speedy trial and punishment for those responsible. Abhaya (the name given to the victim) deserves justice,” one protester said. Another participant, a retired teacher, shared: “Despite my health issues, I had to leave my third-floor apartment to join the procession. The medic was like my granddaughter. No other granddaughter should face such a tragedy.” Meanwhile, junior doctors in West Bengal ended their 11-day sit-in outside Swasthya Bhavan on Friday, partially resuming duties in essential services at state hospitals. This decision came after state Chief Secretary Manoj Pant issued a 10-point directive aimed at improving safety and efficiency in the health system.

However, the doctors insisted they would continue their protest until Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met their five demands, giving the government a seven-day ultimatum. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case on September 27.
