Kolkata Rape Case: The Principal of RG Kar Medical College Quits
The principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata resigned from his post due to the massive protests over the rape and murder of a PG doctor. “The girl who died was like my daughter. I am also a parent. As a parent, I am resigning,” said Sandeep Ghosh.
The tragic incident occurred at the hospital seminar hall, where the postgraduate trainee was reportedly raped and murdered by a civic volunteer. The victim’s body was discovered on Friday morning, prompting an outpouring of shock and grief within the hospital community. After committing the crime, the accused returned to his place of residence, where he proceeded to sleep until the following morning. Subsequently, he endeavored to wash his clothes to eliminate any incriminating evidence. Nevertheless, the police investigation revealed the presence of blood stains on the accused’s footwear. The accused, Sanjay Roy, is not affiliated with the hospital as an official associate; rather, he is a regular visitor to the premises.
In a statement to the media, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh unequivocally expressed his refusal to tolerate the humiliation on social media. He asserted that political statements were being falsely attributed to him. “Students are inciting my dismissal. I demand punishment for the accused. My reputation is being tarnished. I did not make any remarks,” he informed the media this morning.
Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari aimed at Dr. Ghosh and called for his suspension. Mr. Adhikari expressed on X that Dr. Ghosh’s demeanor appeared careless, and his remarks following the tragedy were misleading, suggesting a lack of concern for the victim. The opposition leader hinted that individuals close to Dr. Ghosh could be implicated in the incident. Additionally, he indicated that the police are working swiftly to conclude the investigation to prevent any attempts to evade detection. “His influence in the power circle is substantial,” added the Leader of the Opposition.
Police are waiting for the final report; the initial autopsy indicates severe injury, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. The public hospitals in Delhi have initiated an indefinite strike in solidarity with the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association’s call for action. The affected hospitals encompass some of the largest medical institutions in the region, including RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Safdarjung Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, VMMC, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, GTB, IHBAS, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and the National Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Hospital.
