Goa police arrested Priya Yadav in Kolhapur on Monday for her alleged role in a cash-for-jobs scam. Yadav, who had been evading arrest since July, is accused of defrauding several residents of Bicholim out of over Rs 1 crore by promising them jobs in the railways or shops at railway stations.
Her associate, Rohan Venji, a government employee, was suspended following the revelation of his involvement. Although Venji has not been arrested, police noted that he is cooperating with the investigation.
Further investigations revealed that Yadav took loans by mortgaging her victims’ gold jewelry, and authorities seized gold items weighing about 116 grams valued at Rs 9 lakh as evidence. Yadav reportedly owns neither personal bank accounts nor vehicles.
North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal stated that a Bicholim police team had been sent to Maharashtra to investigate. Using technical surveillance and intelligence gathering, they tracked Yadav to Phulewadi, Kolhapur, where she had stayed for nearly two months. She was subsequently detained and officially taken into custody.
