Indore: Several tales of torture were revealed during a surprise government inspection of an orphanage in Indore on January 12. The children, aged between four and 14 years old, informed Child Welfare Committee officials that they were hung upside down, branded with hot iron, tortured with red chili smoke, and photographed after being stripped naked as punishment for minor mistakes or sometimes none at all.
Police registered a case against five employees of the orphanage on Thursday, under the Juvenile Justice Act and the IPC following the complaint filed by CWC. Police said that no arrests have been made yet as they are still corroborating charges against the accused based on the statements made by the 21 children to the inspection officials.
The Collector of Indore, Asheeh Singh, commented on the incident, “We have found violations of the JJ Act. We have sealed the hostel and shifted the children to government facilities.” The FIR carries pictures of children’s injuries, which are consistent with being branded with a hot iron, said police. The FIR further stated, “A 4-year-old boy was confined to the bathroom for hours for defecating in his trousers, and he was not given food for 2-3 days.”
Chandrabhan Singh, in-charge of Vijay Nagar police station, in conversation with the newspapers said, “Sub-inspector Keerti Tomar, the investigating officer, recorded statements of the children at government shelters. They did not speak of being hung upside down, as mentioned in the FIR, but did say that they were mistreated and beaten up.”
The children at the facility were identified as orphans from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh. The orphanage has branches in Indore, Jodhpur, Surat, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, and it’s still unknown how these children ended up here.
