Kerala: Massive Landslides in Wayanad; At Least 24 Killed, Dozens Of Missing
Wayanad landslides: Heavy rainfall and damage to the main bridge in Chooralmala have hindered rescue efforts. Due to landslides, Mundakkai, Churalamala, Attamala, and Noolappuzha villages have been cut off.

Wayanad: The death toll in a massive landslide caused by heavy rains in Kerala’s Wayanad district has increased to 36. Landslides occurred in the hilly areas near Meppadi on Tuesday morning, with Mundakkai, Churalmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages most affected. Many people are feared trapped under the debris and rescue operations are being hampered due to heavy rains. Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has deployed fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in the affected areas. An additional NDRF team is on its way to Wayanad. Two Kannur Defense Security Corps teams have also been instructed to assist in the rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked to cancel all government programs scheduled for today given the Wayanad landslide. Meanwhile, the Palakkad administration has banned mining in the district until further orders.
Indian Army’s DSC Centre, Kannur has deployed two flood relief teams to rescue stranded people and government personnel in Vythiri taluk. Defense Security Corps personnel of the Indian Navy are moving toward the landslide sites for search and rescue operations. IMD has changed the heavy rain alert to ‘red’ for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. An orange alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the death of people in a landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad district and assured Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of all possible help from the Center to deal with the crisis. The Prime Minister also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased. Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.
Amit Shah said this while posting on his X account, Amit Shah wrote I am very worried about the incidents of landslides in Wayanad, Kerala. NDRF is conducting search and rescue operations on a war footing. The second team has left to further strengthen the response operation. My condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and said,” I hope those still trapped are brought to safety soon… I have requested them to ensure coordination with all agencies, set up a control room, and inform us of any assistance for the relief efforts.”
Mundakkai, Churalamala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages were among the areas affected and cut off by landslides, officials said. According to district officials, many families have been shifted to different camps or the homes of their relatives due to the landslide.
