An FIR has been registered at the Karol Bagh police station in connection with the recent fire incident at Vishal Mega Mart, which claimed two lives. The FIR cites negligence under Sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Investigation Underway
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the fire. He added that authorities are working to fix responsibility for the negligence. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) confirmed that the outlet lacked proper fire safety arrangements and a Fire No-Objection Certificate (NOC). However, the culprits remain unidentified.
Fire Safety Concerns
The DFS had pointed out that the store’s lack of “proper fire safety measures.” They also noted its failure “to take requisite steps for public safety” prima facie led to the fire. The police are still investigating the matter. A detailed inspection of the five-storey building where the multi-chain departmental store was located is yet to be conducted due to excessive heat at the site.
Accident Details
At least 93 people, including 70 customers, were inside the departmental store when the fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Two customers were found dead after the flames were doused – a 25-year-old man inside the building’s elevator and the charred body of a 30-year-old man on the second floor.
Next Steps
The police have written to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seeking details about the building’s ownership. They are also inquiring whether the owner held the mandatory trade license required for running commercial activities. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to gather more evidence to bring the perpetrators to justice.
