Kapil Parmar scripted history at the Paris 2024 Paralympics by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a medal in judo. It was an important day for Indian sports. The 24-year-old judoka from Madhya Pradesh, competing in the men’s 60kg division, defeated Brazilian Elielton de Oliveira in the final on Thursday with a fabulous display of talent, grit, and determination.

The road to the Paralympics has not been easy for Parmar. Suffering from vision issues presented a host of challenges on and off the mat. Undeterred by obstacles, Parmar studied judo relentlessly, gaining a multitude of national championship titles. His first-ever international outing was at the Asian Para Games, where he secured a silver medal, which prepared the ground for his Paralympic journey.

In Paris, Parmar had to contend with tough opposition as the best parajudokas around the world competed against him. Parmar ultimately fought in a closely contested match for the bronze medal, performing with an exceptional amount of skill and strategy. The victory is a realization of the potential of para-athletes in a sport that, up until this point, had been dominated by competitors without disabilities. It is also part of the growing success of India in the Paralympics, which is gaining momentum. Judo is relatively new to the Paralympic sports platform in India but demands both psychological and physical strength. It is expected that Parmar’s achievement will encourage other disabled athletes to take up the sport and provide an impetus for the emergence of a new generation of parajudokas.

The bronze won by Kapil Parmar stands as a testimony to the strength of grit and the resilience of the human spirit. This is also a serious turning point for India, which has been gathering momentum over the last decade in Paralympic sports. The number of medals that the Indian delegation to the Paris 2024 Paralympics has already won in different sports increases with the addition of Parmar’s bronze in judo. As India celebrates this historic achievement, millions will continue to be inspired by Kapil Parmar’s story that everything is possible with perseverance and hard work.
