Novak Djokovic created history on Sunday by defeating Medvedev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 and winning the highest number of Grand Slam titles in men’s history.
The number two tennis star in the men’s ranking, The second-best tennis player in the world, just made himself even more famous. He won on Sunday and has as many Grand Slam titles as Margaret Court, who had the most.
In the second match against the player he lost to in the 2021 US Open final, the Serbian won this time. He defeated the No. 3 seeded, Medvedev, at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. This made his return to the United States a big success.
Djokovic said after the match, “This means a lot to me. I’m fulfilling my childhood dream by playing at the highest level in the sport that has given my family and me so much.”
Djokovic was really good in the first set, and he didn’t have any difficult moments. He hit 12 winning shots in nine games. Before tonight, whenever Djokovic won the first set at the US Open, he almost always won the match. He only lost once, and that was against Stan Wawrinka in the 2016 final.
The second set was a close fight between Djokovic and Medvedev. They took turns winning games in an intense battle. After playing for an hour and 45 minutes, Djokovic won the tiebreak 7-5.
After that, Djokovic had the advantage, and he was just one set away from winning his fourth US Open title. He easily won the final set and only needed one championship point to secure the historic title.
By winning, the 36-year-old has become the oldest man to win the US Open singles title since the tournament started allowing all players to compete. He’s also the first man to win three major tennis championships in a single season. He did this before in 2011, 2015, and 2021.
Djokovic now has more men’s singles titles than anyone else in history. He has 24, while Rafael Nadal has 22, and Roger Federer has 20.
Women’s Tennis News: Thrilling Win for Coco Gauff over Aryna Sabalanka in US Open Final
Coco Gauff, who is ranked 10th in the world in women’s singles, made a big comeback to beat Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. She won 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the US Open women’s final.
The crowd full of famous people cheered loudly when Gauff won on her home court at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens. This is the first Grand Slam win for the 19-year-old Gauff, and she’s the first American teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams, who has won 23 major titles, did it in 1999.
“I feel like I’m in shock at this moment,” said an emotional Gauff after her win. “God puts you through tribulations and trials, and that makes this moment sweeter than I would have imagined.”
The First Grand Slam Victory for Coco Gauff
The last time Gauff and Sabalenka played against each other was in March at Indian Wells. Sabalenka won easily, 6-4, 6-0. But in the final on Saturday, it was a completely different match. Gauff had gotten much better in the six months since that loss.
The 19-year-old won three big tennis tournaments this year, and the most important one was in Cincinnati right before the US Open.
Even though she lost in the final, Sabalenka had an amazing year. She won three championships, including her first big one at the Australian Open, and her sixth Masters 1000 title in Madrid.
