Bengaluru, Karnataka, Feb 16, 2024: During a TV interview on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that he was open to working with any US president, although he preferred Joe Biden to Donald Trump.
Questioner Pavel Zarubin asked Putin which of the two candidates, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, was “better for us”.
“Biden,” was Putin’s prompt response. He’s an old-school politician, more seasoned and dependable.”
He continued with a small smile, saying, “But we will work with any US president who the American people have confidence in.” For the first time, Putin had made public remarks about the US election in 2024, which will likely pit Biden and Trump against one another twice.
His remarks were more likely to be interpreted as mischievous than taken seriously during a period of intense political unpredictability in the US and the lowest point in bilateral ties in over 60 years.
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Biden oversaw the Western response, which included NATO expansion, a series of sanctions against Moscow, and the transfer of billions of dollars’ worth of aid and arms to Kyiv.
Many of Trump’s detractors think he would give the head of the Kremlin a much easier ride because of his reluctance to criticize Putin during his first term and his more recent remarks, which include an interview from the weekend in which he stated he would encourage Russia to attack NATO members who did not spend enough on their own defense.
Despite stating it would be improper to meddle in the election, Putin permitted himself to express opinions about the two contenders and even to address the delicate subject of Biden’s mental health.
“Yes, that was three years ago when I met with Biden in Switzerland, but even then, many were saying he wasn’t capable of it”. Putin remarked, “I saw nothing of the like.”
He brought up an incident that embarrassed the American leader—Biden’s head bang during the June 2018 chopper incident—while seeming to support Biden.
“Well, which of us hasn’t banged his head somewhere?” stated Putin.
He added that Trump “has been called a non-systemic politician; he has his view on the topic of how the United States should develop relations with its allies.”
Putin, who has held the position of president or prime minister since 1999, is 71 years old, making him six years younger than Trump and ten years younger than Biden. In an election that takes place next month, he is almost certain to win a second six-year term, as two of the candidates who opposed the conflict in Ukraine were eliminated for submitting bogus documents.
The US Senate Intelligence Committee discovered in 2020 that Russia attempted to sway the 2016 U.S. presidential election in favor of Trump, who defeated Hillary Clinton.
