Joe Biden Hosts 75th NATO Summit, Seeks to Prove His Presidential Prowess
US President Joe Biden welcomes leaders of NATO states in Washington for the annual summit starting Tuesday, with leaders planning to gather transatlantic support for Ukraine in its battle against Russia. For Biden, however, hosting the summit is more than just a diplomatic duty; it is about demonstrating that he is capable of meeting the demands that come with the next four years of his potential presidency.
NATO celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and finds new purpose in showing its support for Ukraine, and welcomes Finland and Sweden as new members. The 32 NATO members come with a full agenda focused on the provision of military and financial aid to Ukraine, alongside a pathway to an eventual membership in NATO. However, they also come to Washington with worry over whether Biden would continue staying in power. The leaders of Europe and North America are also confronting the idea of former President Donald Trump returning, as he was an outright skeptic of NATO.
Despite growing concern from Democrats over Biden, who is 81 years old, and his capacity to take on the role of President following a halting debate performance, he has vowed to compete against Donald Trump in the upcoming Nov. 5 elections. During his tenure, he reversed various policies that were put forth during Trump’s “America First” approach, restoring various traditional alliances abroad to eliminate the threat of autocracies. Undeniably, the winner of the upcoming elections will completely change the trajectory of NATO and Europe.
The president claims that his work at the summit will stand as a testament to his ability to carry forward his role for another term. He points to his ability to lead and gather various world leaders to assemble coalitions and inspire confidence, especially in a stiff response to Russia, as one of the reasons he deserves to keep his current position. Moreover, NATO leaders view Biden as producing tangible results for Americans, creating a safer country with strong diplomatic relations, more alliances and power abroad, and at less risk of conflict with rival nations. “Our allies are looking for U.S. leadership,” Biden said in an MSNBC interview Monday. “Who else do you think can step in here and do this? I expanded NATO. I solidified NATO. I made sure that we’re in a position where we have a coalition of … nations around the world to deal with China, with Russia, with everything that’s going on in the world. We’re making real progress.”
However, these arguments are strongly rejected by the Trump administration and their Republican allies. Trump has consistently criticized NATO members who failed to meet the agreed goal of spending at least 2% of their GDP on defense. Meanwhile, he also raised anxiety among European leaders in February when he said in a campaign speech that he “would encourage Russia to do whatever the hell they want” to countries that don’t meet this goal if he returns to the White House. He also criticised Biden for providing “an endless flow of American treasure” to Ukraine.
Over the days following the election, the President has been on a desperate move to persuade voters that he is still up to the job, especially after a debate performance that convinced even hardcore Democrats otherwise. Six Democratic House members have already publicly called on Biden to step down from his campaign, while other lawmakers have done so privately. Several high-profile donors have also raised their concerns regarding his viability to continue on in the Presidential race.
Moscow perceives NATO as a tool for US dominance, and accuses the US of bringing back a “cold war” environment. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also expected to meet with the President and discuss crucial matters.
