Rajasthan Police have arrested a notorious “bride thief” who targeted wealthy men through matrimonial apps, stealing cash and jewelry worth millions and blackmailing their families with false legal cases, officials said.
The woman was apprehended in a raid in Uttarakhand after months of investigation. Police revealed she had married a prominent jeweler from Jaipur after connecting with him on a matrimonial app. Gaining the trust of his family, she fled with jewellery and cash worth ₹36.5 lakh. She further filed false cases against the jeweler and his family in Dehradun to blackmail them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amit Kumar confirmed her arrest, noting that she had similarly duped other businessmen and professionals in the past. Investigators suspect her involvement in multiple such cases and are interrogating her for additional information.
The case came to light on July 29, 2023, when the jeweler filed a complaint. He detailed how, after losing his first wife, he sought a partner through a matrimonial app, eventually marrying the accused in February the previous year. Police uncovered a carefully planned scheme where the woman specifically targeted wealthy or divorced businessmen and professionals.
After initiating contact, she would gather details about her victims’ finances and businesses. Post-marriage, she would spend a few months gaining the family’s trust before fleeing with valuable assets.
Victims who challenged her found themselves entangled in fabricated cases of domestic violence and harassment. Leveraging these legal threats, she extorted significant sums, often leading to jail time for those who resisted.
Authorities are urging other potential victims to come forward with information.
