Shiv Sena (UBT) chief and former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday urged his supporters to counter the BJP’s ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan with ‘Jai Shivaji’ and ‘Jai Bhavani,’ accusing the ruling party of fostering societal divisions. Addressing Shiv Sena (UBT) workers in Mulund, near Thane, Thackeray likened the BJP-led government to Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler.
“If anyone chants Jai Shri Ram, ensure you respond with Jai Shivaji and Jai Bhavani before they leave. The BJP has poisoned our society, and I will challenge them for what they have done,” Thackeray asserted.
He also questioned the BJP’s commitment to national interests, pointing out its inconsistent stance on international sports. While the party had previously opposed sporting engagements with Pakistan, India now plays cricket matches against both Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Responding to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ recent remark in the legislative assembly—“I am not Uddhav Thackeray to halt ongoing projects”—Thackeray countered by urging Fadnavis to follow his example by implementing loan waivers for farmers and increasing funding for welfare schemes like Shiv Bhojan and Ladki Bahin in the upcoming budget on March 10. Thackeray defended his tenure, stating that he had strategically paused certain projects and would have shifted the Metro-3 car shed to Kanjur Marg had he remained in office. He further alleged that the land has now been allocated to the Adani Group.
The dispute over the Mumbai Metro-3 car shed site emerged after the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in 2022. Following Eknath Shinde’s rebellion and the BJP’s return to power, the new administration decided to establish the Metro car shed at Aarey, despite Thackeray’s preference for Kanjur Marg.
Thackeray also took a swipe at Fadnavis, reminding him, “The coastal road was constructed under my leadership. I was the one who performed its groundbreaking ceremony.”
