Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni suffered her first regional loss since taking office in 2022. According to partial results, a center-left candidate received the majority of votes for President of Sardinia. Alessandra Todde, the center-left candidate, is a member of the 5-Star Movement, backed by the Democratic Party (PD).
After an initial quick count, Todde received 45.3% of the votes. Meanwhile, Truzzu received 45% of the votes. Hence, he admitted defeat.
Todde celebrated her victory with the 5-Star Movement leader, former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and secretary Elly Schlein. The center-left Democratic Party is Italy’s largest opposition party.
Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party, and Giuseppe Conte presented a united front during the elections. While they had previous differences, they will change the current political climate together.
Todde will be the first female president of the island and the first president from any 5-Star Movement region. Upon final confirmation, this will be the first win for the center-left since 2015. It has been years since the center-left managed to take over the region and win after years of being beaten at the ballot box.
At Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, Todde commented that she was happy and proud of adding a page to Sardinia’s history.
The election was on Sunday, with authorities counting the votes on Monday morning. However, it took them an unusually long time to count the votes. Hence, they decided to waive the 12-hour deadline for completing the procedure.
Meloni’s bloc, consisting of the Brothers of Italy party, the League, and Forza Italia, won all four regional elections held in 2023. Before Sunday, the ruling party controlled 14 of the 20 Italian regions.
Todde’s win suggests the opposition can take down the four upcoming regional elections. She is also a suitable candidate for the 2024 national European Parliament elections.
Francesco Galietti, founder of Policy Sonar, states that Sardinia has proved immune to Meloni’s invincibility. Policy Sonar is a political risk-analysis firm.
Meloni had demanded that a party candidate should replace the outgoing governor. However, he was unpopular with the public.
According to several other polls, the rightist coalition is still ahead at the national level. Unfortunately, this political setback has raised questions about the future of Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League.
